The decontamination equipment that you choose can make all the difference to your infection prevention, controlling standards and processes. Only by making an informed decision and investing in quality, reliable products will you be able to ensure consistent cleaning and sterility and provide a safe, compliant environment for both patients and staff.

The first step on the pathway to decontamination success is to put in place a maintenance process which considers the type of equipment that you are using.

Reprocessing is a crucial part of a dental practice’s daily routine, keeping patients and staff safe, as well as ensuring instruments work efficiently.

Using a handpiece maintenance device is key to quick, efficient, and comprehensive lubrication of the gearing components and cleaning the spray channels.  Due to the precisely metered quantity of lubricant, consistent oiling ensures that there is no risk of over-lubrication and improves the life of your handpieces.

The use of a thermo washer disinfector is regarded as best practice for disinfection before sterilisation, as the technology ensures a reproducible, validated, medically effective washing process that will always guarantee the optimal removal of harmful proteins and decontaminants. All accredited washer disinfectors are manufactured for purpose and use very high water flow rates at high pressure to clean and disinfect instruments thoroughly.

As you know saturated steam under pressure delivered at a high temperature is the recommended method for the sterilisation of most instruments in the dental setting, but selecting between the three types of steam sterilisers is important. The Type N, a non-vacuum steriliser designed for non-wrapped solid instruments is not suitable for handpieces.  There are two vacuum autoclaves – Type B, which can reprocess all load types such as hollow, air-retentive instruments like handpieces and packaged loads, and Type S, which is only compatible with specific load types from certain manufacturers. Type B sterilisers are generally considered to produce the best results and are most appropriate for a 21st century dental practice.
