Ibuprofen: 400mg Tablets (84)

Ibuprofen belongs to the group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Ibuprofen can be used to relieve pain and inflammation caused by rheumatic and muscular pain, headaches, migraine, backache, period (menstrual) pain, pain after surgery and dental pain.

Ibuprofen can also be used to relieve cold and ‘flu-like’ symptoms including fever (high temperature) in adults and children.

Ibuprofen works by reducing the effect of irritant chemicals which are produced by the body as a response to inflammation and high temperature.

Who can take Ibuprofen?

• Most adults and young people aged 17 and over can take ibuprofen.
• For under 17s read the package information carefully and if unclear seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Who may not be able to take Ibuprofen?

Do not take Ibuprofen if you:

• have ever had an allergic reaction or symptoms like wheezing, runny nose or skin reactions after taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen.
• are pregnant.

To make sure Ibuprofen is safe for you, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:

• have ever had bleeding in your stomach or a hole (perforation) in your stomach caused by an NSAID.
• have had a hole (perforation) in your stomach, bleeding in your stomach or a stomach ulcer more than once.
• have a health problem that means you have an increased chance of bleeding.
• have severe heart failure, severe kidney failure or severe liver failure.
• are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
• have high blood pressure that's not under control.
• have heart disease or mild to moderate heart failure, or have ever had a stroke.
• have kidney or liver problems.
• have asthma, hay fever or allergies.
• have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
• have chickenpox – taking ibuprofen can increase the chance of certain infections and skin reactions.

If you're over 65, ibuprofen can make you more likely to get stomach ulcers. Your doctor will prescribe you a medicine to protect your stomach if you're taking ibuprofen for a long-term condition.

Dental Profession specific information for Ibuprofen

Dental practitioners' formulary - With oral use:

• Ibuprofen Oral Suspension Sugar-free may be prescribed.
• Ibuprofen Tablets may be prescribed.

Using Ibuprofen for Toothache

See a dentist if you have toothache that lasts more than 2 days.

They can treat the cause of the pain and stop any problems getting worse.

See a dentist if you have toothache:

• that lasts more than 2 days
• that does not go away when you take painkillers
• with a high temperature, pain when you bite, red gums, or a bad taste in your mouth
• and your cheek or jaw is swollen

Go to A&E if you have toothache and:

• the area around your eye or your neck is swollen
• swelling in your mouth or neck is making it difficult for you to breathe, swallow or speak

Do not drive to A&E. Ask someone to drive you or call 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Bring any medicines you take with you.
