Are you happy? If you are there's a 90% chance that you're smiling right now! There may be a lot of confusing, hard to read facial expressions but smiling is the universal sign of happiness. It's a common myth that it takes less muscles to smile than it does to frown, and although we don't quite know exactly how many muscles are used there are plenty of reasons to smile each day. Here are a few of our favourite reasons to turn that frown upside down!
You Smile Before Birth!

That's right, thanks to 4d ultra scans we're now able to see how pre-borns actually feel about being on the inside. 4d ultra scans take multiple photos from different angles, then stitching them together to form an image with depth to help distinguish features. The technology shows that some developing babies appear to be even be smiling in the womb. After birth it is also very common for babies to smile in their sleep. So why stop there? If we smile from that age its a clear sign it should be natural!
Look More Attractive

Everyone wishes to look more attractive, so why not start off simple, Smile! Its a no brainer really, but several research reports state that we find others more attractive when they are smiling. I mean let's be honest, have you ever found someone looking angry or frustrated attractive? If you picture someone smiling rather than frowning you'll find they look much more attractive. A study by Golle, Mast & Lobmaier in 2013 shows how emotional expressions of happiness influence the judgement of attractiveness. Creating computer generated faces, differing only their attractiveness and happiness. Participants where asked to identify the faces they found most attractive. Obviously the smiling faces were favoured, but what was also interesting from their findings was that the less attractive, smiling faces were chosen over the more attractive, but less smiling faces.
Feel Good

If you're smiling, there's no doubt that your having a better time than if your not! Smiling is known to release endorphins and also serotonin, a neurotransmitter that increases communication from one part of the brain to another, and is known to produce feelings of well being and happiness. Depression is often linked to the lack of production or reception of serotonin. If the neurotransmitter is unable to reach its receptor sites, or has a low brain cell production it often affects our mood, sexual desire and sleep. So with that in mind, smiling can essentially increase sleep, and who doesn't love a good nights rest!

They're Contagious

Have you ever been in an awful mood and someone has came along with a big old grin on their face? It rubs off on you doesn't it? That's because smiles are contagious. As homo sapiens we are great communicators and we are generally able to understand how people are feeling. One instinct we have as humans is to mimic each other's facial expressions to gain a better understanding into how they are feeling. This instinct is actually a sensorimotor simulation, which is why we do it without realising. The mimicking is done so that we trigger the same emotional state ourselves, therefore understanding their mood. So smile on! Because you may just bring someone out of a bad mood and make their day.
Increase Business

How do we enforce sales? By creating a positive atmosphere and attitude towards our products/services. How do we create a positive atmosphere and attitude? By being enthusiastic and energetic! And there's no way you can portray enthusiasm nor energy with a frown on your face. As mentioned before; smiles are contagious, so what better way to enforce a positive outlook than to smile! By smiling when interacting with clients you are bringing warmth into your service, seeming happy to see them. Even telesales encourage smiling when engaging with customers, this is because we even speak in a more positive tone when smiling.
We smile everyday, on average over 5 times a day, and every time we do, we are spreading our joy and becoming more approachable. There is so much power carried with a smile, and we do it without even thinking about that. so whether your generally a smiler, or if you want to convey a more positive attitude, just smile, and keep smiling! Even if you need do force it, I'm sure it will feel good!
